Nile Breweries Limited has changed ownership three times in the last 20 years. Founded in the early 1950s, this company was proudly indigenous to Uganda and operated by the Madhavan family. Over time, the business has been acquired by a number of people, including Americans and Brazilians, in recent years.
The business is in danger of going out of business because it has faced numerous difficulties in recent years. It has a high employee turnover rate, and the majority of departing employees blame the company for their subpar working conditions and low pay.
Among the difficulties posed by employee turnover is the introduction of new hires who have attempted to discredit existing staff members who do not share their beliefs.
The employee turnover has come with its own challenges, including bringing in new employees who have tried to undermine other employees who are not aligned with their culture. Towards the end of last year, several employees left the company for greener pastures, and one of the new faces on board was a one Wangechi Gitahi a Kenyan national & former Unilever marketeer. She quickly sat in the role and began her duties. However, behind her work culture was a trail of corruption scandals she left at her former employment, and she wanted to quickly apply them in the new company. At Unilever, she had swindled millions of money from the company through kickbacks in sponsorship deals and paying her “pseudo companies” money for services that were not delivered to the company.
Another case was in 2023, where she offered Rotary Cancer Run under Unilever a sponsorship of Ugx 130m and demanded 30m in kickbacks, according to our sources that this tabloid interacted with.
Even though Mrs. Nalubega Martha, the human resources representative, was aware of Wangechi Gitahi’s unethical past, her hiring is still a mystery. Additionally, Mrs. Gitahi is accused of bribing the Human Resources lead to allow her to be hired by removing her background check information from the hiring authority.
Public scandals are nothing new to Nile Breweries. Although there are currently little specifics, our paper can also confirm that the Managing Director is involved in a UGX 300 billion tax evasion case with the Uganda Revenue Authority. When it’s ready, we’ll make them available.
